The Biggest Growth Sectors in Green Business
Nearly any business can find ways to go green. While there are certainly industries that are more environmentally-friendly to begin with, like green technology, for example, anyone who runs a business can work on strategies to reduce waste and pollution within their operation and create a more sustainable commercial enterprise all around. However, green industry in and of itself has been growing and changing over the last couple of decades thanks to increased demand for eco-friendly products and services, not to mention rapidly advancing technology that can be put to use on the behalf of environmental pursuits. So for those that are looking to enter into a career that lives up to their green sensibilities, here are a few options that look to be growing into the future.
If you pay attention to the news you may be aware of the growing general interest in the foods we consume and their relative state of healthiness. Although food producers assure us that they have done extensive testing and found no links between chemicals used to grow foodstuffs (pesticides, fertilizers, and so on) and the rise in occurrence of certain diseases (cancer, for one), people have become less content to take them at their word. And then there is the recent discovery that many of the supposedly "natural" foods we ingest every day are actually GMOs (genetically modified organisms), making them about as far from natural as you can get. The result has been growth (pardon the pun) in the organic foods industry. So if you like to work with your hands, organic agriculture could be an interesting enterprise to explore.
Also on the rise is alternative energy technology. Solar panels and wind turbines are nothing new, per se, but the technology that makes these sustainable energy options available to the average property owner continues to expand. Innovations that allow for less expensive or more durable materials to be used have seen continued growth; just look at Samsung's mobile schools in South Africa, which feature solar panels made from durable rubber compounds to facilitate frequent jostling during moves. And then there are mass energy options, such as the development of solar-paneled roadways that may be able to provide energy to entire cities (at least that's the concept). With limited reserves of fossil fuels burning up faster by the day, sustainable energy can only grow.
Another avenue to explore is urban planning. Qualified engineers can definitely bring eco-friendly expertise to play in this type of job, which deals with building affordable housing (perhaps with local or recycled materials?), making public transportation more efficient, planning energy and water grids, and mapping out green spaces within urban settings. Is there any better job in which you display your prowess when it comes to implementing a more eco-friendly way of living? Whether you're interested in getting back to basics through and organic farming co-op or you're looking to fast track your way through an MBA online no GMAT necessary, you'll want to consider the green impact you can have in your industry of choice. And with ever-expanding growth in a variety of green sectors, you're sure to find an eco-friendly occupation that's just right for you.
