Eco-Friendly Ways to Get to Work
The ongoing state of the environment is a high priority for most people these days as extreme weather patterns signal the climate change that pundits have been predicting ad nauseum, thanks to the significant rise in greenhouse gas emissions over the last century. And while we are only beginning to realize how badly we've screwed up our planet through pollution, waste, and the consumption of fossil fuels, most of us have known for a while that the exhaust produced by petroleum products in our vehicles was the culprit behind smog, acid rain, and common ailments like asthma, allergies, and possibly even cancer. So if you're looking for ways to reduce your carbon footprint in an almost literal sense, here are some alternatives when it comes to your transportation to and from work each day.
-
Telecommute. The best option for you and the environment is to skip going to the office altogether, so approach your company about the prospect of instituting a telecommuting program. Although many corporate offices are wary of such a proposal for obvious reasons (those working from home may split their focus between personal and professional pursuits while on the clock), you could form a convincing argument by suggesting the installation of some kind of monitoring software on laptops for employees to take home. This way the company could keep tabs on employees during work hours (with timed screen shots and clock-in/clock-out options, for example) while simultaneously greening up their brand image.
-
Bike. If you simply have to go in to the office regularly, determine whether or not riding a bike is a viable option. If you live within a few miles of your workplace and you enjoy a moderate climate year-round, there's really no reason you can't bike to work and then change into appropriate office attire once you arrive. As a bonus you'll get some excellent aerobic exercise (and you'll save a ton on the cost of a vehicle). If, however, you have to deal with weather issues or a longer commute, at least consider a scooter as a more fuel-efficient option than a car.
-
Mass transit. Trains and buses may pollute more heavily than the average car, but when hundreds or thousands of people use them, the eco-friendly factor increases significantly. So look at options in your area and ask your company if they might be willing to work out some kind of employee savings plan for annual passes.
-
Carpool. This is a good idea for so many reasons. Obviously, it's great for the environment when fewer cars are on the road each day. But it also helps everyone to save money (on gas and other related expenses), save time (thanks to use of the carpool lane), and reduce stress (and road rage).
-
Alternative-fuel vehicle. If you're on the prowl for cars or trucks for sale, consider looking into eco-friendly options. While fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids can offer you lower emissions, savings at the pump, and even government rebates, you're pretty much looking at buying new if you want to get the latest technology. But you could also research alternative-fuel options (biodiesel, ethanol, etc.) and used vehicles (like certified pre-owned cars) that come with greater fuel economy.
